The Balvenie - Single Malt Scotch Whisky

History of Whisky

CHAPTER

What is Whisky?

With no rules about how to make a blend or what to put in it, problems soon occurred. Court cases ruled that only Pot Still whisky could be called whisky. This was a blow to Distillers Company, the biggest distilling and blending group, who demanded that a commission be set up to determine the definition of Scotch whisky. Malt distillers meanwhile, believed grain whisky to be of inferior quality and did not deserve the name whisky. The commission of 1908 - having sampled several whiskies - eventually reached a conclusion, recommending that the use of "the word whisky should not be restricted to spirit distilled by the pot still process".
