Until 1963 most of the whisky drunk across the world was blended whisky. However, in Scotland and Northern England malt whisky was also enjoyed. It was not until this time that malt whisky was produced in large enough quantities to allow for export. It was the family which owned Glenfiddich Scotch Whisky that led the way - and pioneered the sale of malt whisky outside of Scotland.
